Manchester United will play in next season’s Champions League group stage, after confirming our place in the Premier League’s top four on Thursday night with a 4-1 victory over Chelsea.
The Reds return to the competition after a season away, but who will also be involved in the 32-team tournament when it gets under way in September?
In addition to United, 18 other teams have already booked their place, with more to be rubberstamped over the coming weeks and months…
ENGLAND
All four participants have been confirmed, with United joining Premier League champions Manchester City, runners-up Arsenal and Newcastle United – qualifying for the first time since 2002/03 – in next term’s group stage. The only aspect that has to be decided is whether we or the Magpies finish third, although this will have no bearing on the Champions League draw.
FRANCE
The destination of the Ligue 1 title is yet to be decided, but holders Paris Saint-Germain have already amassed enough points to seal their spot in Europe’s elite club competition. One of either Lens or Marseille will join them in the group stage, with the other entering the qualifying rounds.
GERMANY
The Bundesliga will decide its champions on Saturday, as Borussia Dortmund only have to beat Mainz at home to end Bayern Munich’s decade-long dominance in Germany. Both sides will be in next season’s Champions League regardless of the weekend’s results, as will RB Leipzig. The remaining spot is between competition newbies Union Berlin and Freiburg, with the sides currently only separated in fourth and fifth on goal difference.
ITALY
Napoli’s first Serie A crown in 33 years guarantees them a place in pot 1 of the draw, while Lazio will return to the competition for only the second time since 2008. Five teams are still competing for the remaining two spots, although Internazionale and AC Milan look best placed to qualify following the 10-point deduction meted out to Juventus on Monday.
SPAIN
United knocked Barcelona out of the Europa League earlier this season, but next term they will be potential Champions League opponents following their La Liga title success under Xavi. Despite a disappointing campaign in the league, Real Madrid will be involved in the tournament for the 27th consecutive year, while Atletico Madrid recovered from a poor start to seal a top-four position. The remaining spot looks likely to be going to Real Sociedad, who are five points clear of Villarreal with two games to play.
OTHERS
Portugal get two automatic places in the group stage and these have already been sewn up by league leaders Benfica, who are a win away from sealing a 38th championship, and FC Porto.
The champions of Austria, the Netherlands, Scotland and Serbia are also in, so congratulations to Salzburg, Feyenoord, Celtic and Red Star.
The winner of next Wednesday’s Europa League final in Budapest is guaranteed a place in pot 1 of August’s group-stage draw. Competition specialists Sevilla – who will finish mid-table in Spain but knocked us out in the quarter-finals – go up against Jose Mourinho’s Roma in that one, with the Giallorossi looking set to miss out on Italy’s top four.
Once all the above is settled, that will leave six group-stage places to be decided, with those teams having to pass through the various qualifying rounds, which begin at the end of June.
