# Derby Day at Old Trafford: Defence Under the Microscope

Right, Reds, let’s talk about the elephant in the room. Six goals conceded in three matches. That’s not the Manchester United we demand, and it’s certainly not the standard Michael Carrick set when he guided us to that brilliant third-place finish last season.

The stats don’t lie: our worst defensive start since 1972. Think about that for a moment. We’ve got world-class centre-backs in Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martínez, we’ve added quality in midfield with Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos, yet somehow we’re leaking goals like a rusty tap. Something needs fixing, and fast.

City rolling into Old Trafford chasing their seventh opening four-game winning streak tells you everything about the challenge ahead. They’re purring under their new setup, building momentum, and they’ll fancy their chances against our fragile backline. But here’s the thing: Carrick knows how to win big matches. He proved that as interim boss, beating City, Arsenal and Liverpool on his way to securing Champions League football for us.

This is exactly the kind of fixture where United can reset the narrative. Derby days have their own rules, their own energy. Form goes out the window when these two lock horns at the Theatre of Dreams. Our midfield combination of Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte has the quality to control proceedings if they turn up with the right intensity.

Yes, the defensive stats are worrying. Yes, questions about our summer business are valid when we’re conceding two per game. But there’s no better time to silence the doubters than a Manchester Derby at home. Carrick needs to find the solution quickly because Champions League football returns this month, and we can’t be shipping goals at this rate against Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid.

Come on United. Show us what you’re really made of.
